Ripple Strengthens European Blockchain and Crypto Ties with UBRI Program Expansion

0

Ripple, the blockchain technology company, continues to bolster its presence in Europe by forging closer connections with the academic community in the region. To further advance blockchain education and research across Europe, Ripple has added four prestigious universities to its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) program, celebrating its fifth year of operation.

The newly established European partner universities include Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), EPITA (France), IE University (Spain), and the University of Trento (Italy). These academic collaborations reflect Ripple's commitment to fostering blockchain education and research in Europe, particularly as the region aims to establish itself as a global cryptocurrency hub.

Since its inception in 2018, UBRI has invested over $11 million in its 14 partner universities across Europe. This commitment aligns with Europe's burgeoning interest in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, marked by initiatives like the Market in Crypto Assets (MiCA) legislation, designed to provide regulatory clarity and spur mainstream adoption.

Eric van Miltenburg, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Ripple, emphasized the importance of equipping the next generation with knowledge and practical skills in blockchain technology. He noted that Europe's efforts to enhance regulatory clarity are creating opportunities for crypto projects to flourish.

IE University, as part of its partnership with UBRI, will host a three-day virtual asset regulation workshop. This workshop will focus on applied research, entrepreneurship, and corporate transformation, aiming to prepare students for the regulation-driven cryptocurrency landscape.

Ripple has also rekindled its collaboration with the Centre for Blockchain Technologies (CBT), an educational program initially launched at University College London (UCL) with support from UBRI. The program, now named UK CBT, is expanding its reach beyond UCL to include Birmingham and Edinburgh, with additional expansions anticipated. UK CBT will continue to contribute to projects related to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and promote XRPL innovation and adoption through various programs and support.

Dr. Paolo Tasca, Founder and Director of UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies, expressed the desire to position the UK as a global blockchain leader. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between governments, regulators, industry leaders, and universities in advancing innovation, defining standards, and nurturing the next generation's digital technology skills.

Ripple is currently hosting its third annual Apex XRPL Developer Summit in Amsterdam, marking the conference's European debut. This event underscores Ripple's commitment to its European partners, including TU Delft, with whom UBRI organized the XRPL Hackathon – Apex 2023. The hackathon featured high-level challenges and rewarded innovative projects, fostering collaboration among universities and XRPL-related initiatives.
