Biggest XRP Holders In 2025: From Ripple to Whales, the Rich List Revealed

The leading holder of XRP in 2025 is Ripple Labs, the San Francisco-based company that created the XRP Ledger and issued the digital asset. Ripple controls close to 42% of the total 100 billion token supply , securing its position at the top of the XRP rich list. The company’s stake is divided into two categories: approximately 4.5 billion XRP in liquid holdings for operations, and about 35 billion XRP placed in escrow . As elaborated by Cointelegraph, Ripple releases 1 billion XRP from escrow monthly through a smart contract mechanism. This structure was designed to provide a predictable supply while avoiding sudden surges that could disrupt price stability. Despite this monthly release, Ripple often relocks most of the tokens, with more than 60% of the unlocked amount typically returned to escrow. If the company were to stop relocking entirely, the entire 35 billion balance would run out in about three years. The current pattern of careful treasury management, however, means Ripple is likely to remain the single largest XRP holder for the foreseeable future. While its control provides stability for its operations and On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service, many investors remain concerned about the risks that come from one entity holding such a significant percentage of supply. Chris Larsen’s Individual Holdings Alongside Ripple Labs, co-founder and executive chairman Chris Larsen stands out as the largest individual holder of XRP. Public blockchain records reveal he controls more than 2.5 billion XRP across eight different wallets, amounting to roughly $7 billion at recent prices. Several of Larsen’s wallets have remained untouched since receiving founder allocations in 2013, while others have been more active. In July 2025, he drew widespread attention when he sold $175 million worth of XRP shortly after the asset hit multi-year highs above $3. Even after these sales, Larsen still controls nearly 2.81 billion XRP. Commenting on this, blockchain investigator ZachXBT stated on X, “Wallets linked to Chris Larsen only have another 2.81B XRP ($8.4B) left!” Larsen’s stake accounts for about 4.6% of the total XRP market capitalization, giving him both substantial personal wealth and notable influence within the market. Exchange Holdings and Custody Trends Exchange also a substantial amount of XRP for users. Upbit , a South Korean exchange, currently leads with about 6 billion XRP. This underlines the strength of retail and institutional demand in Korea. Binance ranks second with over 2.7 billion XRP spread across various wallets, while Uphold has grown its share to nearly 2 billion. Coinbase, by contrast, has reduced its holdings to around 780 million XRP, a sharp drop of 57% in one month during Q2 2025. This reduction followed soon after the dismissal of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s case against Ripple in August, giving the asset clear legal standing in the U.S. It is worth noting that the XRP controlled by exchanges largely represents customer assets rather than direct corporate ownership. These balances reflect market demand and trading activity more than institutional control. Whale Activity and Broader Ownership Patterns Beyond Ripple, Larsen, and exchanges, large individual and institutional investors have been building positions throughout 2025. Data from June shows a record 2,708 wallets now hold over 1 million XRP each, the highest number recorded in the network’s history. At prices around $3, each of these addresses controls at least $2 million worth of XRP. The increase in whale accumulation coincides with a sharp rise in network activity. Daily active addresses on the XRP Ledger reached 295,000 in June 2025, a nearly sevenfold increase from the prior three-month average. This suggests that both retail and institutional participants have become more engaged with the asset following the legal clarity sealed this year. Concentration Remains a Key Feature The 2025 XRP rich list highlights a clear concentration of ownership. Ripple Labs dominates with its large escrow and operational holdings, while Chris Larsen’s personal stake ensures he remains one of the wealthiest individuals in crypto. This concentration has raised ongoing concerns about decentralization. Also, the asset’s regulatory clarity and increased institutional interest appear to be driving greater adoption and liquidity.
