Satoshi Nakamoto is now richer than Bill Gates

Satoshi Nakamoto , the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin ( BTC ), is as wealthy as he is elusive, and he’s only getting richer. Namely, the mastermind behind the world’s first and most popular cryptocurrency is now worth nearly $133.5 billion. The number puts him ahead of Bill Gates in terms of net worth, as the Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) founder is worth “only” $118.7 billion. Bitcoin also surged to a new all-time high on Thursday, August 14, gaining 3.4% on the day and trading at $124,457. With a market cap of $2.456 trillion, BTC is now the fifth largest asset in the world, surpassing even Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL ). The cryptocurrency gained a lot of momentum due to growing expectations of easier monetary policy from the Federal Reserve, reignited institutional inflows, and broader market optimism following the resolution of the Ripple v. the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) case. Also beneficial were President Donald Trump’s initiatives favoring the inclusion of alternative assets in 401(k) retirement plans, which opened up a path for $12 trillion in retirement funds to be invested in Bitcoin. Policies such as these have allowed the crypto market’s total capitalization to reach $4.18 trillion, a 67% increase from $2.5 trillion in November 2024, when Trump won the election.
