Ethereum Developers Successfully Deploy Dencun Upgrade on Goerli Testnet: A Step Closer to Mainnet Release in Q1 2024

0

Ethereum core developers have successfully implemented the Dencun upgrade, featuring proto-danksharding (EIP-4844), on the Goerli test network. This deployment serves as a crucial step before the anticipated launch on the Ethereum mainnet, scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.

The Dencun upgrade was initiated on the Goerli testnet at approximately 1:35 a.m. ET, according to core developers during a livestream. The deployment encountered challenges, including a potential "chain split" caused by syncing issues among clients. The development teams of various clients are expected to investigate and address these issues. The network is currently awaiting finality.

It's essential to note that client-related challenges are common during critical upgrades on testnets. Typically, these issues are resolved before the mainnet launch, as client teams work diligently to address synchronization bugs.

In preparation for the mainnet transition, the development team has adopted a phased approach, starting with the deployment on different testnets. The Goerli testnet represents the initial phase of the Dencun upgrade. Subsequent steps include the activation of Dencun on the Sepolia testnet on Jan. 31, followed by the Holesky testnet on Feb. 7. The final release on the Ethereum mainnet is anticipated by the end of Q1 2024.

Dencun introduces EIP-4844 as its central feature, showcasing a novel transaction mechanism referred to as ephemeral blobs or proto-danksharding. This innovative approach enables Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access off-chain data, effectively reducing storage demands. The implementation is poised to significantly decrease transaction costs for Ethereum decentralized applications (dApps), offering substantial benefits, particularly for Layer 2 rollup chains.
