Mayor Eric Adams Slams Cuomo’s Crypto Policies, Promotes Pro-Digital Vision for NYC

New York City Mayor Eric Adams publicly criticized former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s track record in the crypto industry. He stated that Cuomo “dismantled and destroyed the industry” during his time in office. Speaking on Tuesday at the Permissionless conference in Brooklyn, Adams called Cuomo’s approach “wrong” and “misguided,” as residents prepared to cast their votes in the Democratic primary election. Currently running for reelection as an independent, Adams used the conference stage to outline his crypto-forward vision for the city . He announced plans to create a dedicated city council that would advocate for pro-crypto policies in Albany and proposed integrating cryptocurrency into city operations. His proposals include paying for municipal services using digital assets and incorporating blockchain education into school curricula. Crypto in the Classroom and on the Ledger Adams has long positioned himself as a crypto advocate, famously accepting his first three mayoral paychecks in Bitcoin . At the conference, he confirmed he still holds those funds. His broader plans include launching a municipal bond backed by Bitcoin, a proposal that has drawn criticism from city officials. Comptroller Brad Lander previously called the idea “legally dubious and fiscally irresponsible.” However, Adams hinted that he is considering legal avenues to move forward despite opposition, telling the audience he is exploring ways to “circumvent” the roadblocks. In his speech, Adams praised the growing momentum for crypto regulation in the U.S., noting that multiple federal bills on stablecoins and market structure had advanced in the past 120 days. “Now you’re seeing cities picking up, and states picking up the same energy,” he said, emphasizing the need for New York City to lead rather than lag in the evolving digital economy. Contentious Election and Legal Shadows Adams’ remarks came just as former Governor Cuomo enters a heated Democratic primary against multiple contenders, including state assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. Although Cuomo resigned in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct and the threat of impeachment, polls show he remains a frontrunner. Adams himself is not free of controversy. He has faced federal scrutiny over alleged illegal campaign donations linked to the Turkish government. The case led to a shake-up among investigators after Justice Department officials appointed during the Trump administration were accused of politicizing the inquiry. As November’s general election approaches, Adams is expected to face off against Republican Curtis Sliwa — another crypto-supportive candidate — and whoever emerges from the Democratic primary.
